Fifteen year-old Jessy Haded struggles with her love for an “All-American” boy and her loyalty to her Arab-American family. Set against the backdrop of 1970’s New England, Jessy’s comical world is crammed with kooky friends, teenage angst, and an over-abundance of Arabic food and traditions. With Christmas nearing, she must find a way to bring the people she cherishes together while still honoring her family’s wishes.

Four days before Thanksgiving, I announced, with utter certainty, who I was going to marry. Jay would be my husband, and we’d get married at Castle Hill in Ipswich where the hills roll down to meet the ocean. It didn’t matter that ten years later that very thing would happen. I was surrounded by superstitious, traditional people whose beliefs and values didn’t always line up with mine. Of course, it’s probably not the best idea to blurt something like that out when you’re only fifteen years-old. And if you have a father like mine. My declaration of love came the same year as The Great Blizzard of ‘78, an epic storm that caught New Englanders by surprise, dropping twenty-nine inches of snow in just 48 hours. That was when I made my first deal with God. It went something like. “Please God! Let my father come home alive. I promise I won’t disobey him, or talk-back, or do things that make him annoyed.” I never forgot my deal with God. Not once that crazy year. But how was I supposed to know I’d meet Jay and that he’d become the most important person in my life?
